A great many deadlifters use the "Hook Grip" Which is a both hand overhand pull method.. It's harder to do because your grip has to be very strong, and you have to be able to take a little bit more pain. However, it is safer to do than the standard one arm over one arm under method.

When you pull one arm over, and one arm under, you run a higher chance of having a bicep tear on the arm that is under. And that is why advanced lifters tend to stay away from the one under one over... Now, with that being said.. I know many who pull one over one under (myself included) and I've never had a problem nor have I ever seen anyone tear anything pulling that way... but in truth it does raise the chances of an injury.

Typically most bicep tears happen from guys doing bent over barbell rows underhand... they can do a little more weight (initially) but they greatly increase their chances of a bicep tear.. Bent over barbell rows should ALWAYS be done overhand.. for the simple fact that you avoid injury, use better form and it better isolates that lats by greatly reducing the load on the biceps.

A tip for doing Hook Grip Deadlift (both hands over hand grip) Is to grip very tight while keeping your fingers together... take your Thumb and put it over your index and forefinger (the flip off finger).. Use yoru thumb to help hold your fingers gripping the bar. That is where the little bit of extra pain comes into play, but it will definitly help you hold onto more weight... This will help you in your training as your grip stength increases.

Nice post Phreezer. I lift with the Hook Grip - always have. The one under/one over just didn't feel right... may switch it up from time to time though.

The one over and one under is for a better grip. This grip eliminates the rotation of the bar so the bar doesn't roll out of your hands.

yeah definitely makes sense as to the bent over rows - anything where you are extending your arms underhand while locked to the bar is not good as its a very unnatural movement
