Eating Healthy at the BBQ
It's delightful to grill outdoors when the weather is warm. However, grilling isn't always the healthiest way to eat. Some grill favorites - such as hot dogs and hamburgers – can lead to the production of carcinogenic (cancer-causing) chemicals called heterocyclic amines (HAs). The good news is you can reduce the amount of HAs, and still enjoy your grilled meals. Try the following: * If possible, pre-cook your meats and simply finish them off on the grill for a "barbecued flavor." Less time on the grill means a lower rick of carcinogens on your meats. * Choose foods that do not produce HAs, such as fish, tofu patties, or soy- or vegetable-based versions of grill favorites. * Make vegetable kabobs, grill corn and potatoes, or focus on other non-meat side dishes. Regardless of your meal choices, be sure to cook everything thoroughly, avoid charring or blackening, trim off excess fats, and most importantly, have a good time with your family, friends and food! My wife & I just recently started using our outdoor grill. North Atlantic Salmon with fresh green beans and zuchinni wraped in aluminum foil. Not directly in the flame. During summer time I cook all fish that way. But the sat fat stuff like burgers goes right on the grill..
